A video for Veterans Day
Good morning from Porte Crayon’s hometown of Martinsburg, West Virginia where it may or may not feel like fall. Depends on the day. The highs bounced up and down this week — from the 50s to the low 70s.
Wish Mother Nature would make up her mind.
For one reason or another, I haven’t really concentrated much on Porte’s Civil War service. Guess I’m more enamored by his travels in the 1850s than I am by his days as a soldier. This being Veterans Day, however, I thought it’d be a good time to share the following video.
Funny thing — I wasn’t thinking about anniversary of the World War One armistice when I stumbled across the video and put it in the hopper for this weekend.
A happy circumstance.
Seems God really does take care of drunks, fools and writers of dumb newsletters.
I received a new Porte book in the mail this week — David Hunter Strother, “One of the Best Draughtsmen the Country Possesses.” It was published in 1997 by WVU Press as a companion to the first exhibition of Porte’s work in more than a century. It’s full of information about Strother in general and his art, in particular. I’m still working my way through it but it’s a must have for anyone interested in Porte.
This doesn’t have anything to do with Porte, but in case you missed it, thanks to Sen. Manchin, my pal and NPR colleague Dave Mistich ended up on Morning Edition yesterday.
The Washington Desk roped Dave into a Q&A after Manchin announced that he won’t seek reelection.
Take a listen to the audio file I’ve included here, or you can click the link and hear it on NPR’s website.

I also read with great interest an article from Outside on the “dangerous history of apple jacking.” You’ll find the link below along with a few other things I think worth your while.
